DISTRICT COOLING

15/05/2008

- the most efficient method for supplying cooling to the society.

District cooling with an integrated distribution system is the most efficient and CO2 reducing method of producing and supplying cooling to multiple consumers such as office buildings, business complexes, shopping centres, institutions and other facilities.

District cooling as a system is comparable to district heating, with multiple production facilities and a number of individual consumers who pay for the delivered cooling based on meter readings and a tariff system. The production of cooling to a district cooling system is based a various sources; absorption chillers, free cooling from open waters (sea, rivers, lakes), underground water, and traditional compressor chillers. The different production facilities may be distributed in location but integrated into one united system. The cooling produced from absorption chillers and the free cooling, constitute the bulk production of cooling whereas the compressor cooling facilities are in combination operated for peak and reserve load production.

Absorption chillers are operated from heat. Applying absorption chillers to the district heating system optimises the utilisation of heat because of the surplus of heat that is normally available in vast amounts during the hot months. The heat for the district heating system is a low grade heat and comes from waste incineration, CHP plants, ect. In this way, cooling can be produced at low cost and in an environmental friendly way.

Grontmij | Carlbro has been involved in district cooling projects in numerous countries for many years. At the same time, district cooling is now becoming a commercial possibility in Denmark as recent development in the national energy regulations is turning toward a greener, more energy efficient type of cooling.

Grontmij | Carlbro can offer assistance in all phases of a district cooling project:

  • Assessment and registration of cooling needs at business enterprises
  • Conceptual design and elaboration of feasibility studies including sensitivity analysis.
  • Estimation of the tariff price of the cooling
  • Seeing the project through in all the phases; Detailed design, tendering, supervision, commissioning.
  • Assistance with contracts and agreements between cooling supplier and the customer
