Each wind farm site has specific characteristics, and based on a technical site evaluations and thorough analysis, a basis for design of all structural works must be established.

Site Assessment and Design Basis
Grontmij | Carl Bro has got a leading expertise on evaluation of loads from wind and offshore on combination with loads from waves, currents and ice.

We established the design basis for the worlds first large-scale offshore
wind farm situated at Middelgrunden, Denmark. The knowledge gained
resulted in a specialist task group appointed by the Danish Energy Agency to specify design rules for offshore wind farms and this work has formed the basis for the development of a ‘Danish Recommendation for Technical Approval of Offshore Wind Turbines’

Grontmij | Carl Bro has worked as a key member and editor on several offshore projects. Since then, we have developed the design basis for large Scandinavian wind farms and delivered major parts of the design basis for wind farms in the North Sea and the Irish Sea.


Structural and Geotechnical Design
Grontmij | Carl Bro has a leading expert knowledge on support structure engineering and soil mechanics (e.g. direct and pile founding), onshore as well as offshore (shallow and deep water), incl. the evaluation of the effect of cyclic loads from large wind turbines that are often found to be a determining factor.

Grontmij | Carl Bro is involved in the development of new innovative support structure concepts using extensive experience in design of large support structures, both onshore and offshore.


We use the latest computer technology within Finite Element Method modelling to include non-linear effects of cracked concrete, evaluate composite structures and carry out analysis of structural eigenfrequencies.



Geotechnical Investigations
Grontmij | Carl Bro provides all services related to planning of offshore
geotechnical investigation campaigns including geophysical investigations. We prepare the tender documents for the international prequalification and tender procedure of Contractors according to EU regulations. We participate in negotiations with the successful Contractors and prepare contracts.

Throughout the investigations, Grontmij | Carl Bro applies a flexible approach ensuring the lowest possible cost without compromising the quality. This is implemented by comprehensive supervision and continuously data evaluation followed by project adjustments.

Grontmij | Carl Bro is hereby able to control the investigations
in detail securing just the necessary information for the actual project.
