Procedures for environmental assessments and evaluation of impacts on the environment have been developed as standard tools and are applied by most donors, national governments and national/international agencies, as well as in the private sector. The procedures shall ensure that planned activities do not have unforeseen and negative impact on the environment. The assessments are carried out with a strategic approach as well as on concrete project level.

Environmental Impact Assessment typically comprises a process consisting of a number of steps:
