	The EU Water Framework Directive has become the standard for planning and establishing measures for improvement of the quality of surface and ground water, not only for the EU member states but worldwide. The human pressure on surface and ground water is undergoing rapid increase due to a high demand for water for human consumption, sanitary purposes, agriculture and industry. Further the exploitation of the natural flora and fauna associated with surface waters for human consumption is increasing.
