GROUNDWATER PROTECTION PLANS

02/08/2005
In many countries groundwater provides high quality raw water for the production of drinking water, and it is important to protect the groundwater bodies to secure good high quality drinking water for the generations to come. The assessment of the risk of groundwater bodies of meeting good status is a very complicated issue, as there usually is a long lag time between the start up of a human activity threatening the groundwater until its impact can be monitored, and the subsequent restoration of the quality is technically complicated, time consuming and costly.

Our actual Services include:
  • Setting up reference conditions and criteria for good status for groundwater bodies
  • Groundwater modelling
  • Identification and evaluation of trends in groundwater chemistry, water abstraction and water use
  • Initial characterisation including analysis of existing hydrological, geological, pedological, land-use, discharge, abstraction etc.
  • Relation of groundwater bodies to surface waters
  • Evaluation of pressures and identification of significant pressures
  • Identification of groundwater bodies at risk of failing to reach good status
  • Setting up programme of measures for groundwater bodies at risk.
The EU Water Framework Directive and its daughter directive on groundwater has become the standard for planning and establishing measures for improvement of the quality of ground water, see Environmental planning
