RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT

02/08/2005
The focus on the quality of surface waters and wetlands for recreation and tourism is increasing. At the same time the human pressure on surface and groundwater worldwide is increasing due to high demands for water for human consumption, sanitary purposes, agriculture, industry and power production. Further, the exploitation of the natural flora and fauna associated with surface waters is increasing. River Basin Management (RBM) and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) are approaches to meet these challenges.

River Basin Management projects can comprise a variety of tasks to be done, such as:

  • Analysis of status of water resources and
    their exploitation
  • Prediction and goal setting for pressures on water quantity as  well as water quality
  • Modelling of surface and groundwater resources
  • Monitoring programmes for surface and groundwater
  • Master planning and Integration of environmental issues into sector development plans
  • Action plans for reduction of loads from urban wastewater, industrial discharges and agricultural run-off
  • Economic analysis of water use/use of financial instruments for improvements
  • Implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive
  • Legal and Institutional analysis and development
  • Environmental information management
Grontmij | Carl Bro has expertise and long term experience within all the above elements as well as the challenges involved in such highly multidisciplinary ventures as implementing River Basin Management, Integrated Water Resources Management and the EU Framework Directive.
