No later than 2020, the Arla Group’s global emission of greenhouse gasses will have been reduced by 25 percent. This ambitious plan, to become a natural part of the employees’ everyday, is now being implemented in the entire group.
At a global level, Arla Foods’ emission of greenhouse gasses has been estimated at an annual 1.5 million ton, broken down by production, transportation and packaging. The group wishes to cut off a considerable slice of this; and, as part of Arla’s collective environmental strategy, the group has set a climate objective targeted at reducing the emission by 25 percent before 2020.
”Already, we have implemented many good things in the company; and, in recent years, increased investment within this area has produced good results. Therefore, the time has come for setting new goals in order that we can offer customers and consumers more climate-friendly products whilst contributing to meeting national as well as international climate objectives,” says Peder Tuborgh, Group Executive Director in Arla Foods.

Internally rooted Other than drawing up the climate objective as such, the preparation of a suitable implementation plan ensuring that the climate strategy become rooted in the group’s business processes and the day-to-day behaviour of its employees has been important to Arla Foods. This is why an internal group of experts has gone through a thorough process facilitated by Grontmij | Carl Bro.
Integration into everyone’s everyday behaviour It is of utmost importance to Arla Foods that our climate performance is not expected to be implemented solely in the Environmental Division. It needs to become an integral part of every employee’s normal everyday life, which is why we have considered very carefully what it will take for everyone to make the right decisions, seen from a climate perspective,” Mads Klarskov, senior consultant with Grontmij | Carl Bro, explains. With respect to his own role, he says:
”Our function in the process was to ensure that the group was successful in getting through every phase transition – from brainstorming to the definition of elements, stakeholders, potential impact, etc. We served as professional hecklers to ensure that each nook and cranny was discussed. Also, due to our profound climate knowledge, we were in a position to challenge the group on the technical level. This resulted in an ambitious goal, which I am convinced will be reached by Arla Foods.”
