COPENHAGEN TO GET DENMARK’S BIGGEST FULLY-AUTOMATIC UNDERGROUND PARKING FACILITY

07/01/2008
Grontmij | Carl Bro are to be responsible for the detailed planning of Denmark’s biggest underground car park, with space for over 400 cars. This car park will ease the capital’s growing parking demands.

On 25th October 2007, Copenhagen City Council approved a capital grant for the first fully-automatic underground parking facilities. This will provide the business community and local residents of central Copenhagen’s outer areas with 840 new parking spaces.

Automatic facility with numerous possibilities
Grontmij | Carl Bro have been chosen to be in charge of the detailed planning of the concrete structures for the first of three new parking facilities. This facility, which is to be built underground at Leifsgade at Islands Brygge, will create space for as many as 408 cars, and will be designed to allow parking of cars on several levels. It will be a fully-automatic parking facility, with four car lifts that will take each car down to its space and later bring it up again. The mechanical system is to be supplied by Westfalia.

The project will involve, among other things, building foundations in the limestone layer beneath Copenhagen and estimating water table conditions during implementation of the project.

This new underground parking facility is expected to be completed in spring 2010, when local residents and the business community can look forward not only to better parking conditions, but also better usage of city spaces.

The project is to be carried out in close cooperation with Pihl A/S, which is turnkey contractor for the assignment.
