FROM HARBOUR TO CITY

16/04/2009
Container terminal in Nordhavnen in Aarhus will be an attractive residential area.

Together with architects and technical departments from the municipality of Aarhus, Grontmij | Carl Bro has carried out an extensive site development project, which is to form the basis of the transformation of the former container terminal in Nordhavnen in Aarhus into a residential area.

Grontmij | Carl Bro has completed the project with the establishment of the general road network, a complete infrastructure as well as supply lines for the entire area. The contractor work has been initiated, and in about a year, the complete general infrastructure will be a reality.

The municipality of Aarhus wants to increase traffic safety for vulnerable road users.

Better conditions for cyclists in Aarhus

For the benefit of the cyclists, a bicycle tunnel has been built, as the municipality of Aarhus wanted to increase the traffic safety for vulnerable road users. This bicycle tunnel was not part of the plans from the start, but the idea of a tunnel developed along the way, not least because it is a heavily trafficked area.

The fact that the cyclists are taken into account with a bicycle tunnel fits well with the traffic plan of the government, and the new bicycle tunnel helps reduce the risk of accidents, relieves the pressure on the road network and reduces CO2 emission. The tunnel is about 65 metres long and fully lit 24 hours a day. The bicycle tunnel is part of the general network of bicycle paths in the area, and you can ride to the centre of town in about 10 minutes on a bicycle. As the container terminal is transformed into a neighbourhood, the heavy traffic to and from the container harbour will cease. On the other hand, there will be an increase in car traffic to about 25,000 vehicles a day.

From site development to residential area

”The site development has been a comprehensive project,” says project manager Jan Olesen. ”The cooperation with the municipality of Aarhus and the other external consultants been successful, and the area has been provided with a really good infrastructural solution that takes all road users into account. It will be interesting to see the development of an area that used to be a container terminal and which will now be an attractive neighbourhood in the second-largest city in the country”.

Nordhavnen in Aarhus will be a dynamic area with housing, business, cafés, restaurants and retail trade. The neighbourhood will be the home of several architecturally interesting buildings, such as the Z House and the Iceberg.

The Z House will contain 14,000 m2 of business leases and 11,000 m2 of homes, of which many will have roof gardens and a view of the harbour. The Iceberg will contain owner/occupied homes as well as council flats in 10 storeys.
