RENOVATION OF COPENHAGEN’S MAIN RAILWAY STATION

24/01/2006
Copenhagen’s main railway station, just short of 100 years old, is facing a much needed and comprehensive renovation that is expected to be finished in 2008. Carl Bro Group has been responsible for projecting and is now supplying the subsequent construction management during the renovation of the hall floor, platforms and Banegårdsplads, the square outside the station.

Two years of intensive planning and projecting work by Carl Bro Group is now over, and the tough part of the renovation work at Copenhagen main railway station has started. Carl Bro Group is the construction manager for this very large and complex construction project, which covers the hall floor, platforms and Banegårdsplads, the square outside the station. Work commenced at the start of 2006 and will continue until the middle of 2008, while the railway station and the twelve railway tracks continue to operate. The project is one of the most complicated construction projects seen in Denmark for a long time, and places huge demands on planning, logistics and construction.

The railway station’s load-bearing reinforced concrete hall floor needs to be thoroughly renovated in order to guarantee the preservation of this listed building, so that it can continue to be a meeting point for the 110,000 or more customers who use Banegården every day. Outside, the concrete in the entire apron and parallel pedestrian streets in front of the Hotel Astoria and Hotel Plaza also need renovating, and the apron must also be equipped with new roads, pavements and cycle areas, in part to improve conditions for cyclists and customers to and from the station. Due to the renovation, Banegårdspladsen will be closed to all traffic except pedestrians from April 2006 to 2008. Instead, traffic will be directed to the west entrance on Reventlowsgade.

In addition, platforms 2 and 3 (tracks 3-6) will be lowered and extended in under the station to ensure it is future-proof and complies with international standards, and that passengers can more easily get on and off the new trains with low-level floors for disabled people, etc. At the same time, new stairs will be built from the extended platforms up to the station hall, and the existing elevators, will be modernised. The mini-bars on the two platforms will be removed to provide a better layout. The aim is for the platforms to have an open, clear and modern design that will, at the same time, fit in with the old construction of the listed building.

DSB is the client for the renovation. Carl Bro Group is the project manager for the assignment and is also responsible for engineering planning, construction management and professional supervision with the assistance of DSB architects who are carrying out the architectural planning and architectural supervision, and Atkins Danmark A/S, which is carrying out the projecting and professional supervision for the track facilities. The construction work is being carried out in the main contract by the Pihl-Aarsleff consortium.
