GRONTMIJ | CARL BRO TO SAFEGUARD CLEAN IDYLL AT KÆRGÅRD PLANTAGE

26/06/2007
Region South Denmark and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency have chosen Grontmij | Carl Bro to advise on the unearthing of pollution at the protected Kærgård Plantage site. It is an EU habitat area, and work on the toxic soil presents particular challenges.

Grontmij | Carl Bro competed with four other Danish consultant engineering companies for the assignment of advising Region South Denmark and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency on the unearthing of pollution at Kærgård Plantage. The criteria for awarding the assignment were that Grontmij | Carl Bro distinguished itself by having the best-prepared solution proposal presentation and the best staffing. The assignment will be handled using Grontmij | Carl Bro’s first-rate skills within the relevant professional disciplines, and, as a result, the project team consists of employees from across the business units and departments at Grontmij | Carl Bro.

The work at Kærgård Plantage involves particular challenges and specific requirements, as the area is protected and is an EU habitat area. During June and July, Grontmij | Carl Bro will plan the project in detail and will issue EU invitations to tender for the contracting work, transport of the toxic soil and its treatment so that it can be reused. In the autumn, the inspection will begin with the unearthing of the top 3.5 metres of soil, the bottom 2 metres of which have been polluted by waste water from production of pharmaceutical products by Grindsted Products.

The clean-up of Kærgaard Plantage has attracted a great deal of attention, as both Minister for the Environment Connie Hedegaard and Regional Council Chairman Carl Holst have had the matter on their agendas. This is a prestigious project, with the aim of the assignment being to improve conditions for visits to the beach and sand dunes.
