GRONTMIJ | CARL BRO CONSULTANT FOR MASSIVE EXPANSION OF KØGE HARBOUR

03/05/2007
April 2007 saw the start of a massive project for the construction and the future operation of Køge Jorddepot (Køge soil depot) and the expansion of Køge Harbour – a project which, in the course of the next 12-13 years will add over 400,000 m2 of new land to Køge Harbour.

Following the public tender in 2004, Grontmij | Carl Bro, together with contractor company Per Aarsleff A/S, was selected as a partner in the work of planning and implementing the construction work and land filling at Køge Harbour. Grontmij | Carl Bro has subsequently worked intensively on the project and contributed analyses and calculations that have formed a vital part of the official handling of the project.

A development project benefiting both residents and the business community

Køge Jorddepot will be one of the largest development projects in the history of Køge Municipality. Once the area is filled in, it will be home to a functional harbour environment that will allow the business community to expand activities in a new, larger area that may attract large ships to Køge Harbour. At the same time, the current harbour area at Søndre Harbour will be developed to form new recreational areas for residents in and around Køge Municipality.

Although the project will extend over many years, residents and customers of Køge Municipality should be able to enjoy it within a few years. As part of the planning, the project will be divided into stages, and the finished areas will therefore be taken into use immediately after completion.

The project covers

  • Construction and operation of a soil depot that will receive 4 million tons of polluted earth from the capital area. Once the depot has been filled, it will be converted for harbour-related purposes. The soil depot will be constructed under strict sealing requirements to avoid polluting the environment.
  • Harbour expansion of Køge Harbour, which in addition to the 40 hectares of new harbour areas includes new quays, piers and docks.
  • Development of Søndre Strand (Southern Beach) south of Køge Harbour, where a new beach will be constructed.
  • Development of Køge Marina north of Køge Harbour. Both the docks and the surrounding areas will be expanded.
