SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT OF GAS

20/11/2008
The Norwegian shipping company I. M. Skaugen has entered into a partnership with Grontmij | Carl Bro about developing the prototype of a sustainable system for the shipping company’s gas tank ships. The system is to ensure that the entire cargo of the gas tank ships is brought ashore.

Traditionally, up to 3 percent of the transported gas evaporates, but with the so-called mini LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) system, this waste can be avoided completely. The system is efficient and also good business, as senior consultant Peter Brøndum from Grontmij | Carl Bro explains:

Reduction of CO2
”For each kilowatt hour (kWh) the system uses, 1 kg of gas is reused, which corresponds to 12 kWh. Thus, we multiply the efficiency while reducing the emission of CO2 as well as the very strong greenhouse gas methane. Up to 20 percent of the greenhouse effect comes from methane. This means that, apart from the significant financial incentive, the system also has an extensive environmental gain.”

”As an additional refinement, we are building the system from well-known ”shelf items”, as we want to create a system that does not require special spare parts or special education for the people operating it,” says Peter Brøndum. The system is based on a technology that has been developed and patented by SINTEF in Norway.

I. M. Skaugen has purchased the right to use the technology and has then hired Grontmij | Carl Bro to develop the specific system. At first, a test system will be developed, which I. M. Skaugen is expecting to implement on the first ships in the autumn.
