	Slovakia’s most important legislation in the water sector is the new Water Act, No. 184/2002, Coll. which incorporates the requirements of the EU’s Urban Waste Water Directive, Water Framework Directive, IPPC Directive and Drinking Water Directive. Key agencies associated with water resources management are the main divisions of the Slovak Water Management Company operating in the four main river basins, and 8 new water companies (utilities). The project covers the districts of Poprad and Kežmarok (71 municipalities with a total population of 167,000) and Spišská Nová Ves and Levoèa (66 municipalities with a total population of 125,000). The overall purpose of the project is to support Slovakia in the adoption of the EU environmental acquis, in particular preparation of infrastructure projects covering drinking water treatment, water supply, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment plants. Over 7,000 population will be connected to the water supply system and 39,000 to the sewerage system in Poprad and Kežmarok, and over 19,000 population will be connected to the water supply system and 29,000 to the sewerage system in Spišská Nová Ves and Levoèa. Preparation of feasibility studies for water supply and sewerage infrastructure projects to be funded via EU Cohesion Funds, incl. cost-benefit analysis, financial analysis, affordability analysis, financing plan and procurement plan. Preparation of EIA screening studies and full EIA reports according to EU Directives (85/337/EEC and 97/11/EC) Slovakian legislation (No. 127/94 Coll. on Environmental Impact Assessment). Prepare preliminary construction design documents and drawings according to Slovakian standards (No. 392/1998 of MVRR). Prepare Cohesion Fund applications to the EU for each district to secure Cohesion Funds. On-the-job transfer of know-how to final beneficiaries.
