UGANDA. GEOPHYSICAL SITING, SUPERVISION OF DRILLING AND TEST PUMPING

The National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (NRWSSP) aims to increase the water supply and sanitation coverage levels to 95% by year 2015. Luweero District Local Government intends to utilise funds for construction of handpumped boreholes for community water supply. Implementation of all water supply activities is carried out by the private sector including selection of sites and supervision of construction.
The implementation conforms to the following principals:
- Support to the decentralisation process
- Institutional capacity building especially at district, sub-county and community level
- Demand responsiveness
- Community participation and ownership
- Emphasis on gender responsiveness
Provide services to assist the Client to implement the borehole construction programme effectively including
- Hydrogeological investigation and borehole siting
- Reconnaissance surveys in liaison with district authorities and agencies
- Detailed surveys including investigation to determine groundwater conditions
- Geophysical surveys; electrical profiling; precise location of resistively anomaly (PLRA) method; vertical electrical sounding (VES)
- Consult community and Water and Sanitation Committee on preferred sites
- Supervision of drilling contracts
- Day-to-day supervision authority
- Quality control of contractors work
- Examine tools, materials and equipment and approve or reject as appropriate
- Prepare instruction to Contractor on design and development of water source and other relevant matters
- Ensure that Contractor uses correct drilling methods, equipment and tools; follows the standard drilling practice including record keeping; completes according to recommended design; carries out test pumping correctly; carries out water quality analyses; carries out platform casting and handpump installation; leaves the site in a clean and tidy condition; prepares completion records
- Verify Contractor’s interim and final statements
- Keep site records
- Prepare and submit reports
