“I did my final project at the department, and one of my current colleagues was my supervisor. Obviously, it went so well that I obtained permanent employment”, says graduate engineer Peter Kapiczynski Nielsen, who started at Grontmij | Carl Bro as a trainee and student assistant. Since June 2005 Peter has been employed full-time in the Roads & Railways, East department at Grontmij | Carl Bro.
Currently Peter is on secondment at the Danish Road Directorate, where he is involved with the “Extension of M30 – Southern Motorway” project, in which is a 14-km stretch of road will be upgraded to a motorway. Here Peter is responsible for checking the contractor’s work involving drainage and sewage pipes, asphalt and road markings, etc.
Both professional and personal development“In purely professional terms I have learnt a massive amount of practical information about road building – especially how to perform the work out in the field”, says Peter. He continues: “I have probably developed even more on a personal level, because I’m in daily contact with the contractor and his people. My lack of experience means that in a lot of situations I could easily be pushed into a corner, but it’s really all just a case of taking things as they come – my work with the contractor has actually gone very smoothly, I think”.
Being a young employee at Grontmij | Carl Bro According to Peter it is great being a young employee at Grontmij | Carl Bro: “There are lots of opportunities in the form of exciting and challenging tasks – not just in Denmark, but also in many parts of the world. Also, there’s a great deal of capacity in the form of colleagues you can call on and turn to whenever you move into a new work area”. If you ask Peter why he chose to remain at Grontmij | Carl Bro after completing his studies, he explains that throughout his time at the company he has always felt extremely comfortable – both socially and professionally: “Unlike many other large-scale consultancy firms, there is a relaxed atmosphere here. And yet despite that there is a high level of professionalism, from which a young engineer can learn a lot”.
