…So says 26-year-old bioprocess technology engineering student Søren Lindtofte Brandt, who has been a trainee at Grontmij | Carl Bro’s supply technology department in Århus.
It was something of a coincidence that Søren Lindtofte Brandt ended up as an engineering trainee at Grontmij | Carl Bro – a coincidence that would later prove to be the source of five rewarding months for Søren, and also for Grontmij | Carl Bro.
A perfect match Søren is among the first batch from a new programme at the Engineering College of Aarhus. In a semester’s time, a group of newly-qualified students will be able to call themselves the first graduate bioprocess technology engineers – a course that apparently works well with a company like Grontmij | Carl Bro:
| “I have gained practical experience that simply cannot be matched by study projects.” | “My work placement has given me a real boost. I have gained practical experience that simply cannot be matched by study projects. Right from the beginning I was on an equal footing with the engineers in the team and was given a leading role in handling tasks that matched my specialist knowledge from my studies and my previous industrial experience.”
When the opportunities suffer from growing pains However, Søren was not alone in benefiting from his work placement. Grontmij | Carl Bro has also greatly benefited from the contribution of the trainee who, from the beginning, was thrown into work. Departmental Manager Bjarne Hjorth explains:
“Søren has been involved in many types of project – from preparing tender material, layout and tender lists in connection with a limited EU tender for sample taking and analysis in a municipality to participating in preparation of a connection permit for transfer of process waste water from a company to a purification plant. This has been a win-win experience for all parties. Søren brought dynamism
| “It’s a question of being willing to take the initiative and show responsibility.” | and energy to the team. He wasn’t afraid to get cracking, and this brought opportunities for more exciting, more complex tasks. It’s a question of being willing to take the initiative and show responsibility – and that will gain you even more opportunities.”
Getting ready for the business world For Søren, the work placement was just as much about the future: “Being a trainee has made me much better prepared mentally for the challenges of the future. I have gained confidence in myself, because I have seen that I am good enough for the business world. And I have gained a clearer understanding of how I can use my knowledge from my studies. That’s given me encouragement and the desire to get down to the next, and last, semester of my studies.”
Although Søren will soon be back at school, he is not saying goodbye to Grontmij | Carl Bro – on the contrary: “I have been fortunate enough to have been offered employment on an hourly basis for the remainder of my studies, and therefore will be a regular visitor to the building a few times a week. I have also considered applying for a job here when I finally finish my studies,” concludes Søren.
