There is still a large need for regional development in Eastern Europe. This is also the case in Ukraine where the consulting engineers Grontmij | Carl Bro will contribute to the development of an overall national plan for the regional development of the most disadvantaged regions over the next 4,5 years.
Regional disparities abound in Ukraine where the social and economic development is very unevenly distributed. According to Head of Department at Grontmij | Carl Bro, Torsten Wind, the project is mainly about developing a mechanism for channelling of funds for basic infrastructure such as potable water, roads, health facilities, education facilities, energy infrastructure, and public buildings in rural and remote areas. The EU technical assistance contract amount is 6 million EUR.
“We will participate in the development and implementation of the overall strategy for regional development in Ukraine, including the identification, funding and supervision of a number of pilot infrastructure projects. An exciting task in relation to this part of the project will be to carry out a comprehensive training programme for decision makers at local and regional level” says Torsten Wind.
Director of Division, Hans-Martin Friis Møller, is pleased that Grontmij | Carl Bro once again signs a large international contract.
“Ukraine’s long-term goal of adaptation and potential accession to the EU combined with our experiences gained over many years supporting accession countries joining the European Union has undoubtedly influenced the selection of us as the Lead advisor. The project is at the same time very much in line with our strategic emphasis on urban and regional development, and it will give us an exciting opportunity to use a broad range of our expertises within building, infrastructure, transport and environment” says Hans-Martin Friis Møller.
The project in Ukraine is implemented in collaboration with some of Grontmij | Carl Bro’s international partners and field a team of experts from various EU countries including the new member states.
“The Ukrainians have emphasised the benefits of international experience, especially the experience gained in the new member states of the EU in relation to regional and urban development. All in all, EU’s great neighbour to the East will receive a solid dose of international experience and strengthen its ties to the EU” Torsten Wind concludes.
