GRONTMIJ | CARL BRO WINS TWO MAJOR WIND FARM PROJECTS

27/11/2009
Grontmij | Carl Bro will work a client consultant for the next 6-7 years on two major international wind farm projects in the Gulf of El-Zayt, Egypt and Lam Thakong, Thailand.

Grontmij | Carl Bro has won two major international consulting contracts for wind farm projects in Egypt and Thailand. The company thereby reconfirms its position as one of the leaders within wind farm project engineering.

First large-scale wind farm in El-Zayt
The project in Egypt is the first large-scale wind farm development in the region of El-Zayt. It is financed by the Egyptian government, the EU and Germany’s KfW development bank.

Divisional director Arne Buhl Petersen from Grontmij | Carl Bro says: “We see many perspectives in the wind farm project because it is very large scale and because there are plans for subsequent wind farm projects in the Red Sea region.”

The 200 MW wind farm will be built 130 km north of the Hurghada holiday centre and is currently just a wind-swept wilderness with the Red Sea highway as its nearest neighbour. Besides project design work in establishing the wind farm itself, Grontmij | Carl Bro will assist in developing the infrastructure, including a high voltage connection, a transformer station and facilities for the work force that will build the wind farm.

First phase project of 50 MW in Thailand
The project in Thailand is one of the first large-scale onshore wind farms in the country. The site is situated on a plateau 600-700 meters above sea level in Lam Thakong 200 km north east of Bangkok. It is the first phase project of 50 MW with a second phase to come. The local developer is Ringergy Ltd.

Grontmij | Carl Bro’s role
Over the next six to seven years, Grontmij | Carl Bro will work as a client consultant on the two projects. The work includes project management, project and conceptual design, electrical grid, foundations, access roads, tendering, infrastructure and inspection during the guarantee period, etc.

Furthermore, on the Egyptian project Grontmij | Carl Bro will supply CDM documentation and manage the implementation of avoidance measures with respect to the many migratory birds which pass through the region twice a year in large numbers and at relatively low altitude..

“These two projects will demonstrate our high expertise level when it comes to wind power and establish Grontmij | Carl Bro in the client consultant role for wind farm projects all over the world.” Arne Buhl Petersen concludes.
