MASSIVE ORDER TO ATKINS DANMARK AND GRONTMIJ | CARL BRO

10/06/2009
The two engineering consultancies Atkins and Grontmij | Carl Bro have jointly won the contract to design a rail project for Rail Net Denmark; capital budget totalling DKK 800 million. The design is going to be a major logistical assignment including about 70,000 hours of work to be distributed almost equally between the two companies, and a number of subconsultants.

Atkins also carries out the design of interlocking engineering under the same project, including about 20,000 hours of work.

The main project encompasses establishment of two new main lines, overhead catenary system and structures for passenger trains running between Copenhagen Central and Vigerslev stations, not including the separate Atkins contract on interlocking engineering on the line.

The five-kilometre-long section will provide capacity upgrading allowing for two additional main-line trains per hour in each direction on the Copenhagen-Ringsted line. The section will be established on the existing freight rail area and shall be completed in 2012.

According to Eva Rindom, director of Rail, Atkins and Grontmij | Carl Bro won the assignment partly due to the fact that they could make a large number of human resources available within a short time, and within all technical disciplines.

”We have worked on rail projects before and are aware of the challenges in planning and performing such large construction works in areas with train and road traffic”, says Eva Rindom.

Apart from the ongoing metro project in Copenhagen, the new contract is the largest ongoing assignment for Atkins Danmark which is a multidisciplinary engineering business, specialists in rail projects.

”Grontmij | Carl Bro solve an increasing number of transport and infrastructure projects. We are involved in the assessment of capacity upgrading on the Copenhagen-Ringsted railway line at the moment, and we are working on the expansion of the Danish”Holbæk Motorway” between Fløng and Roskilde West. Cooperating with Atkins is ideal as our core competences within construction works and rail engineering are complementary”, says business unit director Arne Buhl Petersen, Grontmij | Carl Bro.

From Copenhagen Central to Vigerslev station
The two new lines designed for passenger traffic will be carried from Vigerslev to Copenhagen Central on a five-kilometre-long section via the old abandoned freight rail area.

Considering that at Vigerslev, the two new lines will connect to the Øresund line and thus bypass the existing Valby-Copenhagen Central main line, the project will cause minimum passenger inconvenience during the construction phase.

Once established, the new lines can also serve as relief route alignment in case of operational problems on the existing Valby-Copenhagen Central route.
Moreover, it will be possible to include the new extra routing in a long-term solution for Copenhagen-Ringsted capacity upgrading, no matter whether expansion via Køge or Roskilde is opted for.

The project forms part of the KØR project (minor capacity upgrading between Østerport and Ringsted stations) and is expected to be completed in 2012.
