CARL BRO WINS MAJOR EDUCATIONAL PROJECT IN BANGLADESH

12/10/2006
Heading an international consortium, Carl Bro will help to improve the education of 6th- to10th-formers at Bangladesh schools

Carl Bro’s extensive Danish and international experience within the educational sector has won the company a large-scale project in Bangladesh.

Over the next 6 years, Carl Bro, heading a large international consortium, will improve the quality of the education provided to 6th- to10th-formers, which will include the development of competencies as well as strengthening the educational system in general.

Organisation, capacity and education to be strengthened

The project, which is worth some DKK70m, was won in a tendering competition. The client is the Bangladesh Ministry of Education, and financing is provided by the Asian Development Bank. The consortium, consisting of Carl Bro, New Zealand consultant PINZ and four local consultants, will provide 400 international and 700 national person-months to the large-scale project over the next six years. Carl Bro Department Manager Torsten Wind explains:

”The project includes developing the entire organisational system and the capacity of the Ministry of Education, strengthening the training of teachers generally, and targeted additional training of around 100,000 teachers. The project will further include increased access to the educational system for girls, ethnic minorities and the children of poor families. This will involve preparing new teaching materials in languages and dialects spoken only by minority populations such as the population at the Burmese border. The Project will be headed by a Danish specialist with extensive experience from Danida projects, with local companies providing consultants.”

Major international player

The comprehensive educational project is a direct consequence of several other ongoing projects in Bangladesh, where Carl Bro has been permanently engaged within the educational sector for the past ten years. The ongoing projects include PROMOTE, the large-scale EU project to strengthen women teachers’ training and employment in the rural districts. Carl Bro is also engaged in educational projects in several other countries, such as Turkey and Egypt.

”Our extensive experience within the educational sector makes Carl Bro a major and important international player in this market, which is among the highly prioritised Millennium Development Goals of the UN,” Torsten Wind points out. He expects that the new Bangladesh project will further strengthen this position and lead to further projects in neighbouring countries as well as in Bangladesh.
