GRONTMIJ | CARL BRO WILL BE THE CONSULTANT FOR THE RENOVATION OF THE TUNNEL AT NØRREPORT STATION

03/11/2009
Denmark’s busiest transport nodal point at Nørreport Station is to go through a major renovation. The railway enterprise Banedanmark has chosen Grontmij | Carl Bro as consultant for the extensive and complex task.

The membrane keeping the water out of the tunnel tube must be replaced, as it is worn down after almost 100 years of service life. Furthermore, the section joints and internal support structures must be checked and renovated, in order for the entire structure to be well-maintained and functional again. Road and pavement surfaces as well as cables in the area must be dug up to make room for laying out the new membrane. The work on the surface will take place in stages with as much consideration as possible for the many road users and citizens that have errands in the area. Every day, more than 78,000 travellers pass the area. The work in the tunnel tube will be carried out at night in order to minimise traffic disturbance.

This extensive work must be coordinated with two other projects that are carried out at the same time. These projects are the Danish Public Transport Authority’s modernisation project for Nørreport Station, which has the purpose of ensuring better air quality on the long-distance train platform and renovation of the facilities visible to passengers, and Copenhagen Municipality’s project for a new urban space around the station, which will be settled through an architectural competition that will be published on the 3rd of November this year.

Grontmij | Carl Bro has been given the assignment in competition with several large Danish engineering companies. The assignment covers all necessary consultancy in connection with the major renovation in the shape of feasibility studies and project planning before the tender. Furthermore, the agreement includes an option for supervision during the implementation phase. Feasibility studies and project planning have already begun and the repair work is expected to be carried out during the period from 2011 to 2014.

Qualified consultancy
As train services, cars and other road users must be able to use the area during the entire repair work, and as the work should result in as little disturbance as possible for business owners and neighbours in the area, this places great demands on the planning and the technical solutions.

”We have just finished the renovation of the central railway station in Copenhagen with great success and can use many of our valuable experiences from this assignment for the assignment at Nørreport Station. This is also one of the reasons that we have won the assignment, in addition to the fact that we can offer a dynamic project organisation capable of carrying out the necessary planning and risk management of the total project”, explains division manager Arne Buhl Petersen, Grontmij | Carl Bro.

”The project involves several of Grontmij | Carl Bro´s core competences in the construction industry, and we expect the assignment to contribute significantly to the continued development of our broad competences within multi-disciplinary projects with a high complexity”, he says in conclusion.
